This project will collect, develop, and disseminate knowledge to support the decarbonisation of industrial process heat with district heating. The project focuses on municipalities and how they can serve as catalysts for this new type of sector integration.
Background
Decarbonising industrial heat through district heating is a new form of sector integration with significant win-win potential for the process industry and the district heating sector. This type of sector integration is not widely known and needs catalysts to go from great potential to actual decisions within industrial companies and utilities. The municipalities oversee strategic energy planning and are committed to fostering strong local businesses, making them prime candidates to support this development. Today, municipalities are unaware of the potential or are uncertain about which role to take. The focus of this project is municipal heat planning, decision-making, and stakeholder processes, not on technology. Additional synergies with the power system and hydrogen/e-fuel production will also be addressed but are not the focus of the project.
